The truth is

Burnout can be a BIG problem. It can impact your health, risk your professional reputation, erode your relationships, and make you question whether or not you can stay at your job or even in your career.

The key to gaining perspective regarding burnout is to travel with intention on your time off.

I’ll walk you through a process to plan and take a transformational travel experience that truly allows time and space necessary to gain clarity and develop a plan for next steps, whether that’s pivoting professionally or making changes in your current role.

Travel can simply be a diversion with little consequence or serve as a catalyst for meaningful and lasting change in our lives. JOURNEY FROM BURNOUT facilitates planning for and embarking upon a Transformational Travel experience, which can result in the following outcomes:

Expansive mindset

The exhaustion and depletion of burnout makes us feel hopeless and stuck. We feel like we are treading water and don’t know which way to head ashore.

Transformational Travel shakes things up, broadens our perspective, and opens our eyes to new possibilities. New people, places, and adventures are pathways to new ways of thinking and being. Getting out our day-to-day lives allows us to see new pathways forward from burn out.

Reconnection to oneself

We often feel cynical and apathetic in burnout. This arises by doing work that is misaligned with our values and/or focusing on work to the exclusion of our basic needs, including the need for joy and feeling connected to something larger.

Transformational Travel can help spark joy, awe, and—if we’re lucky—transcendent experiences. Rekindling a sense of passion and enthusiasm can remind us of what is important in life and can help us recognize the uniquely personal values we would like to carry forward in our careers.

EmPOWERMENT

Burnout is often characterized by a sense of reduced personal and professional efficacy. We feel like we are spinning our wheels and getting nowhere.

Transformational Travel reminds us of our ability to make things happen. Travel plans will undoubtedly go off the rails, and while often uncomfortable, these are opportunities to remember what we are capable of. Improved confidence in our abilities can help us take the steps necessary to get out of burnout.

Who are you, Lisa Marie?

As a licensed therapist I struggled with my own burnout for many years until I figured out how to use travel and leisure to heal from burnout. I’ve taken three sabbaticals and have traveled to over 30 countries and most US states, mostly solo. 

Now I have a very limited private therapy practice and instead focus my attention on coaching other people to get serious about their time off, overcome burnout, and craft their own versions of the good life.

Lately my travel and leisure experiences have been inspired by hot springs, hiking, tide pools, and partner dancing. I love helping other recovering perfectionists and overachievers find or re-discover their own unique passions and interests.


How we’ll do it

PREPARATION

Week 1: We will start by figuring out where we are at and where we are headed. We will review the Maslach Burnout Inventory and Areas of Worklife Survey results, a 10-15 measure you will have completed prior to our session, that identifies the extent and pattern of burnout and its likely cause. We will also begin to imagine the life you’d like to craft for yourself.

Weeks 2: We will discuss each of the five characteristics of Transformational Travel, AKA the Five A’s, and how they can support recovery from burnout. 

  • Welcoming Adversity 

  • Spending Time Alone

  • Awe and Transcendence

  • Allowing Space and Surrender

  • Alignment with Interests and Values

Weeks 3-6: We will work together to develop a bespoke journey that best facilitates your pathway from feeling hopeless and burned out to having clarity on how you want to restore, replenish, and create a more sustainable career. We will decide when, where, and how you will take your adventure while continuing to identify thought patterns and circumstances that may be contributing to burnout.

Week 7: We will summarize your intentions for the journey, make final preparations, and develop a plan for returning home after the trip.

EXPLORATION

The time has come for you to embark on the journey itself. This phase involves taking your trip!

Have you ever remembered something on the tip of your tongue once you stopped thinking about it? Or been working on something all day only to have an epiphany in the shower? We are trying to replicate that phenomenon through pairing sustained effort on the problem of burnout in the preparation stage with a period of relaxation and unconscious processing in the exploration stage.

We can stay in touch via asynchronous coaching. Text me questions, email me journal entries, send me voice memos about your achievements, send me a video as you’re working out an insight, etc. Allow me to be your cheerleader and help you deepen into the experience as it’s happening.

INTEGRATION

There are two optional post-travel 1:1 sessions included in the program. I highly recommend taking advantage of these sessions to develop a plan for moving forward, whether you decide to stay in your current position or move on. You will also be given an Integration and Action Planning workbook to complete upon your return from traveling.

  • You are wanting someone to plan a vacation for you. We will sort through the logistics of travel planning together, paying special attention to how these choices might support your individual intentions. I can refer you to someone who can make bookings if needed.

FAQs

How much time should I dedicate to this?

The program is 6 months. But outside of the 7 one-on-one 50-minute coaching calls, how much time you put into it is up to you. You can decide how long your vacation will be, whether or not to engage in asynchronous coaching, and how much time you would like to put into the optional additional material I offer, e.g. journaling prompts, worksheets, assessments.

How long does my vacation have to be?

That’s up to you! I’ve had transformative weekend getaways. However, research shows that a sabbatical may be the most effective. I would recommend at least two weeks.

What is asynchronous coaching?

Asynchronous coaching is a way for us to stay in touch via email or WhatsApp. We can exchange text or audio messages. I can offer feedback and recommendations re: your travel planning, be a sounding board for concerns, and–my personal favorite–a cheerleader for your accomplishments and insights.

Do I have to travel somewhere far?

Absolutely not. Road trips are a quintessential avenue for transformational travel. Similarly, a bike or backpacking journey are wonderful ways to gain clarity and perspective. I learned a lot about myself on the 200+ mile John Muir Trail hike through the Sierra Nevadas. Think Cheryl Strayd’s Wild, Che Guevara’s The  Motorcycle Diaries, or Jack Kerouac’s On the Road.

What if I have to miss a 1:1 session?

I recommend recurring weekly sessions over a 7 week period but there is flexibility with regard to scheduling. If it makes sense to do so, e.g. our time zones don’t align, we can arrange asynchronous coaching in lieu of a session.

What if I can’t plan and execute my time off within 6 months?

The timeline is intended to help you pull the trigger on something you may be inclined to put off. Coaching package extensions can be made for an extra expense.
